Brake Pads

Your brake pads are a key element of your braking system and they are a part that you you shouldn’t ignore. Friction is caused when the brake pads compress against the brake rotors which causes your vehicle to stop. Which means hard work for your brake pads every time you stop..
The amount of pressure they have to exert to stop a moving vehicle is extreme and creates a lot of heat which slowly degrades the brake pads.

Worn brake pads means less effective braking and that can mean danger on the road. That's why consistent testing and assessments of your brake pad's condition is important.

Are there signs a brake pad replacement is due?

If your brakes squeal - that can be a sign that your brake pads are wearing down; many pads have a small metal piece set into them which scrapes on the disc when your brake pads are wearing out, causing that high pitch noise. However, it's not advised to wait until you hear noises to get your pads inspected, we advise having your brakes inspected at every service.

It is important to remember that brake noises are not just caused by normal wear and any unusual noises anywhere in your car should always be investigated by a qualified professional mechanic.

At De Jonge Mechanical Pty Ltd we offer a free 65 Point Vehicle Inspection Report with every car service. As part of our Vehicle Inspection Report we inspect the brake pads for wear and inform you if they call for replacing. We can also recommend the right pad for your local conditions and driving style.

How long before I will need to replace the brake pads?

Brake Pads can live anywhere between 15,000 to 70,000 km's. This can change according to a number of reasons such as; driving conditions, driving style, if you are carrying heavy loads or towing. If your brake pads are wearing out early your mechanic might advise using a heavier duty or heat resistant brake pad more suited to your vehicle.
